Client: MTV USA
Campaign: Pax=Peace
Musical Genre: Eclectic
MTV wanted a campaign that made their audience take notice and go “WTF?”
Writer/Director Pam Sonicx delivered on MTV’s challenge.
Pax=Peace is a 30 spot brand campaign promoting global oneness and messages of compassion and tolerance. This provocative campaign aired on MTV around the world. Audiences watching reality shows like Punk’d and Jersey Shore were unexpectedly exposed to these beautiful moments with luminaries such as Desmond Tutu, Deepak Chopra, Ekhart Tolle, Caroline Myss and others espousing ‘We Need Each Other’ and ‘Think Compassionately’. The campaign was met with intrigue, fascination and curiosity – just what MTV wanted.
As the composer on the project, it was exciting to explore the juxtaposition of elements from around the world. I discovered that Tuvan Throat Singers singing over club beatz and Buddhist Monks blending with Gregorian chants could work. It was definitely a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.
Client: MTV USA
Campaign: Pax=Environment
Music Genre: Eclectic
Continuing the Pax campaign with an emphasis on increasing Environmental Awareness.
Writer/Director Pam Sonicx created 20 spots for this brand campaign promoting global awareness of environmental issues and asking people to reconsider how they consume and how they care for Mother Earth. Gorgeous imagery along with delicate messages from visionaries like Louise Hay, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dr. Deepak Chopra and many others helped to highlight the beauty of the world we live in and our responsibility to make the world a better place.
As a composer this was a chance to use environmental sounds and Western and Eastern instruments to create a mosaic of global musicality.
Client: Nickelodeon UK
Campaign: Let’s Play
Music Genre: Children’s Music
Let’s Play is a set of short films for Pre-School kids created for Nickelodeon UK. Using cut-outs of common household items to create each of the elements this is a bright and vibrant campaign.
When I told the producer I wanted to write some smart children’s music, he insisted I immerse myself in 1950’s Soviet children’s animation. Not surprisingly, my early drafts sounded closer to a Requiem than a nursery rhyme but eventually, it evolved into a playful soundtrack that involved using children’s toy instruments and unique sounds that came together quite organically.
Project: My Country
Format: Feature Length Documentary
Music Genre: Cinematic/Ethnic
Set against the backdrop of two “illegal’ boats that arrived in Canada in 2009 and 2010, carrying over 560 Tamil asylum seekers, My Country traces the history of the conflict in Sri Lanka and the human cost of civil war. This documentary went to the prestigious doc festival Hot Docs.
The story culminates in the moving journey of Baskaran, a refugee found floating in the Atlantic in 1986, as he returns to Newfoundland 25 years later to thank those who rescued him at sea.
South Indian music, hybrid ethnic and ambient cinematic were the main musical genres used in this project.
Project: Tesla’s Children
Format: Feature Length Documentary
Music Genre: Cinematic Electronica
Nikola Tesla – the original mad scientist/genius never had children but he was a towering inspiration to generations of renegade scientists and inventors who followed in his footsteps. This documentary explores the lives of some of these modern day inventors. This was funded by a Canadian broadcaster and so far has aired in Canada with more air dates globally to be announced.
From a musical standpoint, I wanted to build a soundtrack that relied heavily on analog synths and pulsating arps that carried that classic retro electronica vibe. That was all the excuse I needed to blast a lot of Jean Michel Jarre and Kraftwerk to get in the zone to create. Heaven!
Project: Les Bons, Les Méchants, et la Bicyclette
Format: Feature Length Documentary
Music Genre: Cinematic, Rock, Funk
This CBC documentary asked the question, “Why is being a bicyclist in Toronto so dangerous?” and what are the policies (or lack thereof) that help shape the cyclist scene in Toronto? The story then moves to Montreal to investigate why that city succeeded in transforming itself into a bike-friendly city.
The project called for fun, quirky music interspersed with tense cues – reflecting the energy of biking in big cities.
Project: Loblaws Superstore
Format: :30 sec. commercials
Music Genre: Ethnic Hybrid
I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to do commercial music for brands such as NBA TV, Shaw Cable, Waterpik and CIBC.
Here’s a sample of 2 spots for Loblaw’s and Loblaw’s Superstore targeting the South Asian and Asian markets.
Project: Annual Getaway
Format: Feature Film
Music Genre: Suspense/Crime Drama
Every year, five good friends get together for an annual week long holiday. But this year, the situation takes an extreme turn as their cabin is invaded by kidnappers who start playing a deadly game with the occupants. As their vacation of terror continues, bizarre alliances, double crosses and the perfect crime eventually reduces an isolated vacation cabin containing eleven individuals down to two surprising survivors.
I had such a blast writing the music for this suspenseful film. In fact, I find writing dark music fun. Is that strange?
Project: Forces of War
Format: Mobile Games
Music Genre: Military/Action/Epic
I’ve created music and sound design for numerous mobile games for Uken Games. These included brand splash pages, Forces of War, Bazingo and Monkey Island.
Writing music for mobile games presents some unique challenges – audio file sizes need to be small, the sound fx library has to be versatile i.e. use and reuse, and cues must sound good when looped and heard repeatedly. There’s just no room for musical fat – always a good reminder of how the medium affects the approach and outcome.
